Just a way station to a new home

current mood: exhausted

On Friday, the LTF Shiwoo I purchased from Kerbey Lane's Rochelle came home. He was only a few months old from FL. I bought him for his body - Mel had painted the Shiwoo Elf faceplate for me years ago and now he was going to become a character.

I could not find the faceplate where I remember putting it (but that was prior to the move), so I packed him back up in his box until I was able to get to the folks' place with all my doll boxes.

Saturday I had been invited to Fencon by Jane Fancher, someone I have known for years under a fanfiction name. We had finally met face-to-face at A-Kon this year, when she mentioned on a writing panel she had written Gravitation fic. When we shared our names, we both squealed and gave the panel audience a laugh.

She was interested in my dolls so I took some of my Gravi and cats brats to visit Saturday. While she loved them all, little Chi, my LTF Shiwoo, charmed her completely with his cute face and super-posable body. CJ Cherryh liked my big Eiri, my largest doll with me, due to his realistic face (SO glad I bought that cart for afest! - I was able to haul heavy dolls!) and they both asked me lots of questions about dolls at dinner Saturday evening. I never in my wildest dreams would have ever thought I would sit with and talk dolls with CJ Cherryh!

The cost, as it does for everyone thinking about entering the hobby, took them back the tiniest bit, but I think they expected those kinds of numbers so it wasn't shocking. Jane started calculating how she was going to save up to finally get dolls to represent two of her characters.

After dinner and before CJ's birthday party, Jane and I went back to their room to get my dolls, which they had kindly let me store there so I wasn't lugging cart all day. It was my intent to head home so while I waited for Jane, a voice went off in my head - the LTF Shiwoo at home said, "You know I belong to Jane. The reason why you bought me from one long-distance friend was to get me to Dallas so you could get me to my new home."

He was right. Me not finding the faceplate immediately was a sign.

I let Donna in on the secret at the birthday party, which at one point turned into a doll meetup in the middle of the suite's floor! LOL! Jane had my SD-sized Shuichi and Eiri in her lap but she kept talking about Chi. I knew I had made the right decision.

I had not planned on going back to the con Sunday but now I had two reasons - to get my beloved copy of "The Pride of Chanur" signed by CJ and deliver a surprise to Jane.

When I got home at midnight I started working on the gift, changing eyes from blue glass to Shu purple acrylics, digging out some Ken clothes so he wouldn't be a nekkie boy and finding a wig that worked on him. Surprisingly, no fiber wig worked, even my little stash of expensive Volks Yo wigs. Of the few fur wigs I had available, the best fit and look was a blond one, which turned out looking great on him. I also wrote up his 'history' of when he originally arrived at his first home so she would have a firm date of pour month and year, how he had talked to me, and some basic doll care.

Finally got to bed at 6am, finally dragged my carcass out of bed at 9am, got ready, put a few dolls in a basket and made it to the second half of Jane's first panel. She had an hour break between panels so we went to the bar to relax, her thinking we would only be looking at dolls.

I pulled out my camera in anticipation of taking a 'box opening' type photo set but I forgot all about it when pulled out the bag holding the lavender FL book box and watched various emotions ripple across her face.

To say the gift was a success is an understatement. That's all I am going to say here because it was a special time for the two of us. Not to say I will not share it verbally with anyone interested but not in text.

I know this little Shiwoo will get much more love and attention than being in my massive Crew and I do truly believe this was supposed to be. Another LTF body will come along when I finally find the faceplate.

Little Shu went to the rest of the panels that day and finally my body told me I was pushing it to the edge and if I did not leave soon I would pay dearly during the work week.

So we said goodbye, for now, and I already miss Jane's energy and enthusiasm.

Chi

Yeah, it was really awesome.

To be able to give the gift of a doll to someone who has fallen so in love with one of yours, AND have an extra of the same to give is highly unusual and I see it as fate that everything was in place.

Another slave to the Shiwoo! LOL!

I'm getting my first fairyland doll at the beginning of the month! A 2nd hand Mnf Mirwen! I haven't had a "new" doll in over 2 years. Last year I traded a doll, but I just got another of a doll I already had. This new girl has been barely taken out the box a few times, no faceup or anything so yeah.. I hope I can bond with her well since I've been strictly volks/narae/unoa (and a shake of artist sculpt heads for variety) for YEARS. I'm REALLY excited though, as soon as I make her first outfit I'm sure everything will just click.

I got to talk dolls with Barbara Hambly until some rude idiot demanded her attention.

Ah, the rude idiots. Saw a few last weekend myself. I don't know how CJ deals with it, but she has years of experience doing cons plus an amazing amount of patience.

I hear ya, I just wanted to shout "EXCUSE ME! Can you NOT see me standing here talking to Ms Hambly?!" But I wouldn't embarrassed Barbara that way...

In a way, I understand the enthusiasm. At the same time, I know famous people are still just people and need their space sometimes. I am the type who recognizes a famous person and either nods to them in passing, or says as I walk by, "I really enjoy your work.", but I don't stop them.

Especially when they are talking to someone else. I guess my self esteem isn't high enough to think I should interrupt *sigh*
